Virtually Safe is working towards creating a safer internet for young people

We believe that the issues that young people face online do not stay online. They impact on our families, our schools, our communities, and the nation at large.

This is the reason we have in recent times experienced record levels of bullying in our schools, depression amongst young people, self-harm, anxiety, identity theft, exploitation and what we call online “gbas gbos” in Nigeria. And we all pay for these harms, it is not a case of the “polluter pays” principle, the consequences are borne by the whole of society and the emotional costs by young people.

This is why protecting children and young people is a shared responsibility and it is upon all relevant stakeholders to ensure a sustainable future for all. For that to happen, parents, carers, educators, policy makers, industries, and other stakeholders, must ensure that children and young people can fulfill their potential both online and offline.

Our mission is to improve digital safety for internet users, support parents, educators and young people in their digital wellbeing while promoting the positive and enriching use of digital technology.

Our vision is a safer digital world that is free from all forms of abuse, exploitations and violence, one that prepares young people to thrive in the digital space.

WHAT WE DO

To fully protect young people from online harm or exposure to unacceptable online risk, all relevant stakeholders must be informed, empowered and engaged. Teachers and parents play a key role in ensuring children understand how to use digital technology responsibly and safely. Targeting young people, educators and parents can help sensitize young people to the dangers posed by risky online behavior.

Our goal is to keep young people safe online. We achieve this through the execution of multiple campaigns and awareness programs through various medium these includes print and electronics media, school clubs, debate competitions, art competitions, yoga and wellness, fellowship programs, card and board games, posters and fliers, comic materials, and many others

We understand that an education based approach alone will not be entirely effective, we need expert knowledge grounded in both research and real world experiences by listening to internet users and reinforcing dialogue through direct consultation or research, and to incorporate their thinking into policies, strategies, and programmes designed to tackle online issues.

Invest in strengthening systems, building capacities and innovative technology solutions to tackle online harms to children.
